Axial load is the primary function
Spherical roller thrust bearings use asymmetrical rollers and raceways arranged to transmit load at an angle to the shaft. This bearing type carries axial load in one direction and can simultaneously accommodate radial load when both load components occur together.
Thanks to their self-aligning geometry, the bearings can compensate for a degree of misalignment between the shaft and housing. This is a significant advantage in heavily loaded assemblies or long shafts, but the permissible misalignment must still be checked for the product series and operating conditions.
Separable design and lubrication
The shaft-washer assembly with its rollers/cage can be separated from the housing washer, making installation and inspection more convenient. Because of the high axial load and roller contact, the lubrication regime must be selected according to speed, load and generated heat. In high-speed or very heavily loaded applications, controlling oil flow and heat dissipation can become decisive.
When selecting a designation, check the load direction, radial-to-axial load ratio, speed, expected misalignment, static/dynamic loads and the support arrangement at the opposite end of the shaft.
