Choose the mounting style before selecting a designation
For a bearing unit, the method of mounting it to the machine must be identified in addition to the shaft diameter. A pillow-block style is suitable when the shaft runs parallel to the mounting surface; a flanged style is suitable for mounting on a wall or panel; and a take-up style is suitable where the bearing position must move for alignment or to maintain tension. Cartridge and hanger styles serve more specialized mounting arrangements.
Therefore, two units with the same bore diameter may not be interchangeable if their center height, bolt-hole spacing, housing style or mounting dimensions differ.
Shaft locking arrangements and operating conditions
The insert bearing in a unit may be secured to the shaft by several methods, including set screws, an eccentric locking collar, an adapter sleeve or a concentric locking collar, depending on the product series. Each arrangement has different installation characteristics and must be selected according to the equipment’s direction of rotation, load, speed, vibration and removal requirements.
Bearing units are normally pre-lubricated. Many cast-iron housing designs also support relubrication. In dusty or damp environments, washdown conditions or where contaminants are present, check the seal configuration, protective cover and grease type rather than considering only the basic designation.
Self-alignment has limits
The spherical outside surface of the insert bearing works with the matching spherical surface in the housing, allowing the unit to adjust for a degree of initial installation misalignment. This capability makes installation more flexible, but does not replace correct alignment of the shaft and machine base. Severe misalignment, housing deformation or incorrect bolt tightening can still reduce the unit’s service life.
When selecting the final designation, compare the shaft diameter, housing style, mounting dimensions, locking arrangement, seals, load, speed and operating environment together.
