The role of adapter sleeves in tapered-bore bearing assemblies
An adapter sleeve allows a tapered-bore bearing to be mounted on a cylindrical shaft, so the shaft does not need to be machined with a taper. With a straight shaft, the mounting position can be selected flexibly; with a stepped shaft and a suitable abutment, the axial position can be defined more precisely.
A standard adapter sleeve normally has a tapered outside surface and a locking arrangement such as a nut and lock washer. As the bearing is tightened or driven onto the taper, the inner ring expands to create the required interference fit. Therefore, mounting position should not be determined only by feel or tightening force, especially for bearings whose installed clearance must be controlled.
H and OH differ in support for pressure-oil mounting
OH designs have oil-feed passages and distribution grooves to support pressure-oil injection between the contact surfaces. This method is particularly useful for large sizes because it can reduce the force required for mounting or removal.
When selecting an adapter sleeve, match the shaft diameter, thread dimensions, compatible bearing designation and intended mounting method. Do not select one merely because two sleeves appear to have similar dimensions.
