When self-alignment is valuable
Angular misalignment can result from shaft deflection under load, machining errors or two bearing housings that are not concentric. Self-aligning ball bearings allow the inner ring and ball assembly to tilt relative to the outer ring within the design limits, reducing the effect of this misalignment.
The permitted misalignment is not the same for every product series and also differs between open and sealed versions. Therefore, do not apply one common angle value to every designation; consult the technical documentation for the specific product.
Cylindrical bores, tapered bores and sealing
Depending on the product series, the bearing may have a cylindrical or tapered bore for mounting with an adapter sleeve. Some series have integrated seals and are pre-greased. When selecting a designation, check the bore type, internal clearance, open/sealed configuration, speed and actual load.
Self-aligning ball bearings are suitable when low friction and tolerance of misalignment are required, but self-alignment should not be understood as a reason to disregard shaft alignment, housing rigidity or fit tolerances.
