What Is an Automatic Lubrication System?

When the brand SKF, you may immediately think of a popular, high-quality bearing brand from Sweden, but few people know that SKF joined forces with Lincoln—one of 12 brands within the SKF Group, a brand with more than 300 years of lubrication-management experience, to create high-quality lubrication products that support industrial operation and production. The most prominent example is the SKF Lincoln automatic lubrication system.

What is an automatic lubrication system?

SKF automatic lubrication system or SKF centralized lubrication system is a system used with industrial machinery to deliver a controlled quantity of lubricant to multiple points during operation.
The automatic lubrication system saves time and effort because it is fully automatic and only requires the press of a button.
Using this system effectively increases machinery capacity and output while reducing dependence on labour. These systems deliver the appropriate lubricant quantity at precise intervals, minimizing friction and wear, optimizing bearing and machinery life during operation and production, and significantly reducing maintenance and labour costs.

The system can be divided into two different types

  • Oil system: Primarily used for stationary production equipment
  • Grease system: Grease systems are primarily used on mobile equipment such as trucks and mining or construction equipment.

Automatic lubrication systems are designed and installed as turnkey solutions.

LDT Vietnam is an SKF authorized distributor specializing in genuine, high-quality and safe industrial lubrication products and accessories. Below we provide basic information about grease and oil lubrication systems.

1.Single-line lubrication

single-line lubrication system

The single-line lubrication system operates by having an automatic centralized pump station deliver lubricant through one supply line to the distributors. Each distributor serves one lubrication point and can be adjusted to provide the precise required quantity of grease or oil. The system can serve one machine, different areas of one machine or even several separate machines.

2.Dual-line lubrication

SKF dual-line lubrication systems are designed for large operating systems with many distributed lubrication points requiring different lubricant quantities. The system uses two main lines to deliver lubricant from a high-pressure pump through a changeover valve.

3.Multi-line lubrication

SKF multi-line lubrication systems comprise a pump unit, adjustment and monitoring equipment, piping and accessories. The multi-line pump supplies lubricant to lubrication points without secondary distributors. Each lubrication point therefore has its own independent pump output.

4.Smart lubrication system

The advanced lubrication system can be used in both large and small operating systems.
It comprises a pump connected to at least one primary metering device. If required, secondary metering devices can be connected to the primary device outputs to increase the number of lubrication points, depending on the pump operating pressure.

The Importance of Lubrication Systems

Lubrication is the most important factor in industrial maintenance. Without a lubrication system, many production and industrial processes suffer from friction and overheating, require more maintenance, increase maintenance costs and reduce production capacity. In fact, without lubricating oil, industrial bearings rarely reach more than 10% of their potential service life, which negatively affects overall commercial productivity.
According to SKF estimates in the United States, using an automatic lubrication system saves time and controls lubricant quantities, equivalent to saving nearly 50% of the costs that a plant would otherwise spend on conventional lubrication and machinery maintenance.

Common Lubricants for Lubrication Systems

Lubrication systems generally use gear oil or grease. Both are excellent lubricants because they have relatively high viscosity and do not adhere to surfaces.
Some of the best greases for SKF lubrication applications include SKF LGFG 2 Lubricating Grease – Multipurpose Lubricating Grease for the Food Industry, SKF LGEP 2 Lubricating Grease – High-Load, Extremely High-Pressure Lubricating Grease, SKF LGEP 1 Lubricating Grease – Extremely High-Pressure Lubricating Grease, SKF LGTE 2 Bearing Lubricating Grease, see more… – All specialized SKF greases resist degradation much better than organic oils. Grease is a semi-solid lubricant that is even more viscous than oil. Industrial grease lubrication does not use greases derived from animal fat.

Advantages of Automatic Lubrication Systems

Automatic lubrication systems are superior to conventional manual methods because they provide:

  • Consistency: Instead of limiting machinery lubrication to allocated intervals, SKF Lincoln provides frequent, consistent and real-time lubrication, which is much more effective for maintaining machinery life.
  • Worker safety: With the SKF automatic lubrication system, factories and industrial zones can eliminate physical risks associated with manual lubrication while machinery is running.
  • Efficient use of time: This system lubricates machinery regularly, reduces downtime and improves productive use of time.
  • Cost savings: Savings in lubrication and maintenance costs while improving production efficiency, productivity and commercial value.

Care and Maintenance of Automatic Lubrication Systems

system maintenance

Although this system is fully automatic and effective, it is complex to maintain. Inspect the lubrication system regularly to detect line damage that could interrupt consistent lubrication and affect industrial machinery and equipment.
Inspect your system at least once a day so that components can be adjusted, serviced or maintained promptly, or so that system accessories accessories can be replaced to prevent operational interruptions. Filters in the lubrication system also require regular maintenance to keep them free of dust and debris. In particular, seek advice, recommendations and inspections from the system manufacturer or supplier, for example regarding operating-temperature conditions.
In addition to supplying lubrication systems, accessories, LDT also provides technical consulting and support for equipment installation and maintenance.
