SKF TMEH 1 is an advanced handheld instrument designed to provide immediate information about oil condition in machinery systems. It allows users to compare measurements from used lubricant with new oil of the same type and brand. Its intuitive display identifies changes in oil condition, helping optimize oil-change intervals and detect increased mechanical wear or deterioration of the oil’s lubricating properties.
Main functions of the TMEH 1
- Quickly detects oil degradation caused by oxidation, water or contaminants.
- Compares used oil with new oil of the same type to determine when replacement is required.
- Supports condition-based maintenance (CBM), avoiding oil changes that are too early or too late.
- applications in:
- Gearboxes, large bearings, electric motors, fans, pumps and compressors.
- Power industry (wind and steam turbines).
- Transport industry (diesel engines and hydraulics).
Practical applications of the TMEH 1
- Industrial plants: monitoring oil in gearboxes, large bearings, fans, pumps and compressors.
- Power and energy industry: wind, steam and gas turbines.
- Transport: diesel engines and hydraulic systems.
- Hydraulic and centralized lubrication equipment: rapid detection of contamination or degradation.
Key features of the TMEH 1
- Operating principle: measures changes in the oil’s dielectric constant.
- Display: numerical values from –999 to +999 with a colour scale (green for good oil and red for poor oil).
- Compact and easy to carry in the field.
- Power: 9 V battery, approximately 150 operating hours or 3,000 measurements.
- Components:
- Oil sensor.
- LCD screen and LED indicators.
- CAL button for calibration with new oil.
- HI/LO switch to select the measurement mode suitable for the oil type.
- Protective carrying case.
Benefits of using the TMEH 1
- Lower maintenance costs: replace oil only when necessary.
- Longer equipment life: avoid operating machinery with degraded oil.
- Fast and convenient: inspect oil on site without sending samples for analysis.

TMEH 1 operating instructions
- Preparation before measurement
- Ensure that the instrument has a charged 9 V battery.
- Clean the sensor with a soft cloth and a residue-free cleaner, such as Loctite™ 7070.
- Prepare the oil sample in a clean cup, or measure the system oil directly where suitable.
- When measuring an oil type for the first time, calibrate (CAL) with new oil of the same type.
- How to use
Step 1: Switch on
- Press ON to start the instrument.
- Wait a few seconds for the self-check.
Step 2: Calibrate with new oil (CAL)
- Immerse the sensor in a clean new-oil sample.
- Press and hold CAL; the instrument stores the reference value for this oil type.
Step 3: Measure the used oil
- Immerse the sensor in the oil sample to be checked.
- Press TEST; the instrument displays the result compared with new oil.
- Two measurement modes are available:
- LO: for low-viscosity or hydraulic oils.
- HI: for high-viscosity oils such as gear and engine oils.
Step 4: Read the result
- The screen displays:
- 0 = oil remains in good condition, equivalent to new oil.
- +999 / –999 = major difference, indicating degraded oil.
- A colour scale is also shown:
- Green = good oil.
- Yellow = monitor the oil; degradation has begun.
- Red = poor oil; replacement is recommended.
- After use
- Clean the sensor immediately after measurement.
- Switch off the instrument using OFF.
- Store it in the case to prevent contamination and impact damage.
- Important notes
- Each oil type must be calibrated separately using a new-oil sample before measurement.
- The instrument does not replace laboratory oil analysis; it is intended for rapid field checks.
- Recalibrate the instrument after a drop or strong impact to ensure accuracy.
- Do not use aggressive solvents that could damage the plastic housing.
