Lubrication system SKF automatic wire-rope lubrication

An automatic wire-rope lubrication system extends rope life while reducing lubrication time, waste lubricant and environmental contamination.
Operating principle of the automatic wire-rope lubrication system
The grease applicator consists of a lubricator body, guide rollers and two seals inside the body. When the body is closed and secured by locking bolts, grease delivered through the supply hose creates pressure that applies an even and sufficient grease layer to the rope. Front and rear guide rollers align the rope and minimize bending. The groove cleaner removes dirt and spent lubricant. Cleaning allows fresh grease to penetrate more deeply between the inner strands, optimizing rope durability.

The importance of automatic lubrication
Applying lubricant to steel wire rope significantly reduces friction, wear, heat generation and corrosion. Developed as a maintenance tool, the Lincoln wire-rope lubricator is mounted periodically—monthly, quarterly or at another interval—to lubricate the rope. The interval should follow the rope manufacturer’s specifications.
Benefits of regular wire-rope lubrication
Regular lubrication significantly extends steel-wire-rope life compared with an unlubricated rope. It also helps prevent internal and external corrosion caused by acids, alkaline water, salt-laden air, humidity, fumes and abrasive or industrial environments.
Advantages of regular steel-wire-rope lubrication
- Reduced friction
- Corrosion protection
- Helps lubricant coat each strand and penetrate the rope core for long-term protection
- Significantly extends wire-rope life
- Improves operator safety. Why is automatic wire-rope lubrication necessary?
Why choose the SKF automatic wire-rope lubrication system supplied by LDT ?
The Lincoln wire-rope lubrication system eliminates manual lubrication and improves results. It forces lubricant into the rope core to reduce friction and heat generation, extending service life. The system applies the correct amount evenly and prevents waste caused by over-lubrication. * Flexibility:
- Allows the device to be installed easily on the wire rope
* 4.5 kg high-pressure pump:
- Ensures consistent lubricant delivery across a wide range of ambient temperatures
- Reduces downtime—the high-pressure pump lubricates at speeds of up to 2,000 m/hour
* Optional high-output 13 kg high-pressure pump:
- Supports high-speed, fast and effective rope lubrication while minimizing downtime.
- Allows lubrication of larger-diameter and longer ropes
Advantages:
- Fast and effective—reduces lubrication time by up to 90% compared with manual lubrication
- Improves operator safety
- Easy to use on any wire rope up to 2 inches (52 mm) in diameter
- Helps prevent corrosion
- Protects the wire rope
- Penetrates the rope core
- Reduces waste and contamination
- Robust design for harsh environments
The groove cleaner is a critical component of the wire-rope lubrication system
- Designed to complement the Lincoln wire-rope lubricator, the groove cleaner removes dirt and used grease before the rope passes through the lubricator. This improves penetration of fresh grease and strengthens corrosion protection to extend rope life.
- Each groove cleaner is custom-made from the rope specifications so that the device profile precisely matches the rope strands.
Advantages:
- Extends steel-wire-rope life
- Improves penetration of fresh grease
- Enhances corrosion protection
- Easy to install and use
The groove-cleaner assembly includes:
- One groove-cleaning unit
- Spacer bushings and bushing holders that minimize wear
- Cleaners made from thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU) for improved durability

Air-operated piston pump
Available for all common drum sizes, this proven grease pump uses a powerful air motor. Its lightweight die-cast zinc head resists corrosion, while the double-acting design provides high pressure and uniform delivery on both upstroke and downstroke.

Ordering and recommendations for selecting wire-rope lubrication-system components
- Select seals and rollers to suit the rope diameter. Interchangeable kits include seals and rollers covering the corresponding rope-diameter range.
- Select the lubricator body to match the guide rollers and lubricating seals.
- Select the pump and accessory package to suit the required grease-container size.
- Select spacer bushings that match the rope diameter.
- The spacer bushings are secured by a holder that is common to all bushing sizes.
- The groove cleaner is designed and manufactured to the exact rope dimensions. To order, customers must provide the rope specifications or submit a sample. For effective cleaning, the groove cleaner must be tightened with T-bolts.
