Lubricating grease oxidation – Even the best lubricating grease deteriorates over time. One of the most dangerous but frequently overlooked phenomena is oxidation.
1. What is lubricating-grease oxidation?
Lubricating-grease oxidation is the process in which components of the grease react with oxygen in the air, creating compounds that change the grease colour and cause it to lose its original properties.
2.Lubricating-grease oxidation – recognizable signs:
- The grease changes from yellow to dark brown or black.
- The grease becomes hard and dry, with flakes or deposits.
- A rancid or unusual odour develops.
- The equipment runs more noisily and temperature increases.
3.Lubricating-grease oxidation – main causes:
- Continuous high operating temperature.
- Long exposure of the grease to air while the container lid is open.
- Using the wrong SKF grease for the temperature and load conditions.
- Using counterfeit or expired grease.
4.Lubricating-grease oxidation – prevention:
- Always keep the grease-container lid tightly closed.
- Do not reuse old grease after it has been removed.
- Use the SKF range appropriate for the operating conditions.
- Store in a dry, well-ventilated and cool place.
